We're Back from Bologna!

After four meeting-packed days at the Bologna Book Fair, the Scholastic rights team is once again state-side.  We had a wonderful fair, re-connecting with editors who are already handling our titles and meeting new editors who are interested in acquiring our other books.  Now that everyone’s back we wanted to share with you a few of our Bologna highlights:

Discover More™ was a huge hit at the fair this year with our booth highlighting the series’ full potential and growth.  Everyone was excited to flip through the books and experiment with the digital books.

Infinity Ring™ interest was very strong with 7-book pre-empts in Brazil and Israel, and pending offers in Germany.  We’re asking for best offers in two weeks.  Most excitingly, we have had interest from both smaller and larger publishers.

On the Young Adult side, Endangered by Eliot Shrefer was a standout, and has already been pre-empted in the UK by Chicken House.  Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Boys is a premier YA series for international licensing, with option publishers snapping it up and new ones coming to the plate as well.

On the middle grade front, we are closing more offers for The False Prince .  Paperback series are still very strong, with Dear Dumb Diary, Point Horror and Rotten Apple generating lots of new interest abroad.

Scholastic’s brands also made a strong showing; theCaptain Underpants movie news is propelling new deals in previously untapped territories, including Germany and France.  Go CU! Walter Wick is very popular, especially in Asia, where the Can You See What I See books are bestsellers in Japan and have a solid following in Korea.  We are also pleased with new European interest in Clifford—the 50th Anniversary book is a classic and stunning showpiece for the brand.

Picture Book interest continues to be focused on key authors and illustrators, and an understated illustration style.  Bailey, Where’s Walrus and My Little Polar Bear were standouts.

We are handling the lin-ternational rights to the first kids’ biography of NBA star Jeremy Lin, have just closed a deal in Taiwan.  This is a great opportunity to share Jeremy’s inspirational story with younger readers.

The reception for our new Star Wars: A Galactic Pop-Up Adventure was impressive.  We strongly feel that this is the most exciting sales piece that exists for Star Wars fans!  We are working on a multiple country co-edition printing for Christmas 2013 worldwide.

Last but not least, Klutz!  Our new Klutz display at the Scholastic booth showcased the finished products in an inviting way.  We are bringing new publishers to the table and are gathering final quantities this month.
